As expected there is the woodblock and the pastel and charcoal drawing. As you may have seen there is also a watercolor. of a number of them almost totally camouflaged by their surroundings. I’d forgotten about it. I do think it accurately reflects how you often see, or don’t see, them but I realize not everyone maybe want that sort of portrayal. If there is something else from the blog that you are interested in please let me know what it is. I will see if I still have it in storage somewhere. I have not seen any in quite a few years so that is why all the work is relatively old. pBest wishes, KenKen Januskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16984782169460110520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618025896103645633.post-22643504268630719202023-09-05T07:04:58.815-04:002023-09-05T07:04:58.815-04:00Hi Stella,

I do think one of the best parts of being out in a snow covered landscape is the silence, only occasionally accented by leaves, birds, etc. In today's world this sort of silence seems to be one of the most unappreciated things that we have. I'm sure you're able to experience quite regularly where you live.

Glad you enjoyed the turnstone. We only seem then when we go to the Jersey Shore and even then we don't see them that often. These were seen with a few Purple Sandpipers so it was a double treat! As soon as I saw them together I thought that I wanted to do some art based on them but that is still off in the future, perhaps the distant future!

Ken

Ken Januskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16984782169460110520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618025896103645633.post-23012899674555986022016-01-29T07:52:35.409-05:002016-01-29T07:52:35.409-05:00Very nice drawing - very graphic. The worst thing that can happen to pote...Hi Ellen,

The worst thing that can happen to potential artists is to be scared off by the pressure to perform to a certain level. In that respect I think art should be more like music in that all sorts of people play and sing it without being professionals. It's just a basic human impulse I think. But with art unfortunately people are more inhibited. They really shouldn't be, though I understand why they are.

In any case I hope that you'll just give it a try, even if you don't show the results to anyone, if that makes it easier. I'd suggest some medium where you can't get too detailed, or worry too much about 'messing up' as they say. I'm not going to suggest anything in particular but just whatever seems comfortable to you. Good luck!!

I always get the biggest kick out of the bright yellow of our winter jasmine.

Ken Januskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16984782169460110520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618025896103645633.post-45621204774038462732015-01-05T06:07:32.473-05:002015-01-05T06:07:32.473-05:00Hi Ken,

I always felt pressure to be accurate or precise in drawing animals--their features, features, details. But that is not my skill.

I like your art of birds in their habitat, setting, landscape. That portrays so much more to me than a detail of a bird's feather.

Thanks also for the burst of yellow color.

Yesterday birds flocked to our feeders, maybe in anticipation of the cold week ahead: 50+ goldfinches, a purple finch pair, one each hairy and downy woodpecker, titmice, and one male bluebird.

Regards, EllenEllen Snyderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09158932570826154360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618025896103645633.post-64312025769103578882014-12-25T13:58:58.307-05:002014-12-25T13:58:58.307-05:00Thanks Ellen,

I also normally see them as drab birds in winter plumage. So this one really struck me. He was very close so maybe that was part of it. As I mentioned on your blog I also had a similar experience with a White-throated Sparrow recently. Though I've always found them striking this one was especially so.

We're also in the freeze/thaw cycle though probably not as much as you. Who knows what winter might bring this year?! Most of our garden is long gone though the kale hangs on and last I checked my newly built cold-frame had young beets, choi, mustard and tatsoi. Generally they just stop growing about this time of year but I'm hoping the beets will overwinter.Ken Januskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16984782169460110520noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3618025896103645633.post-68085143636670784582014-12-02T07:44:58.221-05:002014-12-02T07:44:58.221-05:00Hi Ken,
